Best 12 Gauge by Use Case
Home Defense
#00 buckshot (9 pellets of .33 caliber lead) is the traditional home defense load. Federal Flite Control and Hornady Critical Defense use patterning wads for tighter spreads at close range. Reduced-recoil loads (like Federal Tactical) are easier to shoot fast.
Top Picks
- • Federal Flite Control 00 Buck 8 pellet
- • Hornady Critical Defense 00 Buck
- • Federal Tactical 00 Buck Low Recoil
Hunting (Birds/Small Game)
Birdshot ranges from #9 (tiny, doves) to #4 (pheasant). For ducks and geese, steel shot is required in most waterfowl areas. Federal Wing-Shok and Kent Fasteel are popular picks.
Top Picks
- • Federal Wing-Shok #6
- • Kent Fasteel 2.0 #2
- • Winchester Super-X #7.5
Hunting (Deer)
Slugs for deer hunting. Rifled slugs for smoothbore barrels; sabot slugs for rifled barrels. Effective to 100 yards (smoothbore) or 150+ yards (rifled barrel with sabot).

- • Federal TruBall Rifled Slug
- • Hornady SST Sabot Slug
- • Remington Slugger Rifled
Trap / Skeet / Sporting Clays
Target loads use #7.5, #8, or #9 shot in light (1oz) charges. Winchester AA, Federal Top Gun, and Fiocchi are popular on clay ranges.

What is 12 Gauge?
12 gauge is the most common shotgun gauge in North America. The “gauge” refers to an old measurement system — a 12 gauge barrel has an inside diameter that matches a lead ball weighing 1/12 of a pound. In practical terms: 12 gauge is the standard, versatile shotgun cartridge for everything from bird hunting to home defense.
Shell Types Explained
- Buckshot: Multiple large pellets. #00 Buck (9 pellets, .33”) is the most common defensive load. Devastating at close range.
- Birdshot: Many small pellets. #9 is smallest (tiny, for doves), #4 is biggest (for pheasants). Not recommended for self-defense — inadequate penetration.
- Slug: Single large projectile. For deer hunting or maximum single-target effect.
- Specialty loads: Less-lethal beanbag rounds, rock salt, flare rounds — generally not useful for defense.
Shell Length
- 2 3/4” — Standard length, works in all 12 gauge shotguns.
- 3” — “Magnum” load, more powder/shot. Most modern shotguns chamber 3”.
- 3 1/2” — Super magnum. Only specific shotguns chamber this — check your barrel marking.
What’s a Good Price?
Buckshot: under $1.25/round is excellent; under $2.00/round is fair. Birdshot in bulk (250+ rounds): under $0.40/round. Slugs: $1.50-$3.00/round for quality hunting loads.
