What is .25 ACP?

.25 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) was designed by John Browning in 1905 for the FN Model 1905 pocket pistol. The European designation is 6.35mm Browning or 6.35x16mm. It’s the smallest centerfire semi-automatic pistol cartridge in widespread production.

From a 2.4” barrel (Beretta 950 Jetfire), a 50gr FMJ leaves the muzzle at approximately 750-780 fps, producing roughly 63-68 ft-lbs of energy. That’s less than .22 Long Rifle from a 16” rifle barrel and roughly comparable to .22 LR from a pistol-length barrel.

Browning designed it specifically for pocket pistols — not for power, but for operating a simple blowback semi-automatic from an extremely compact pistol that could be concealed in a vest pocket. The purpose was always defined by size, not performance.

Honest terminal performance

.25 ACP is not a defensive cartridge by any modern standard. The numbers tell the story.

From a 2.4” barrel:

• 50gr FMJ: ~770 fps, ~66 ft-lbs, penetration ~9-11” in bare gel (no expansion)
• 35gr FTX: ~900 fps, ~63 ft-lbs, inconsistent expansion to ~0.35”

For comparison, .380 ACP (the minimum most defensive trainers recommend):

• 90gr FMJ: ~1,000 fps, ~200 ft-lbs

.25 ACP produces less than one-third the energy of .380 ACP. The stopping power literature consistently rates it at the bottom of viable defensive handgun cartridges. In wound ballistics studies, .25 ACP FMJ produces narrow, shallow permanent wound channels.

The honest statement: .25 ACP is better than no gun. It is not better than a pocket .380 like the Ruger LCP or Kel-Tec P3AT, and those modern .380 pistols are not much larger than classic .25 ACP pocket guns.

Who still uses .25 ACP

Owners of vintage Colt Vest Pocket, Browning Baby, Beretta 950 Jetfire, or similar historic pocket pistols who want to shoot them. These are elegant mechanical instruments with historical significance. Running 50gr FMJ through a prewar Browning Baby is entirely reasonable as a range exercise.

People in specific circumstances where a .25 ACP pocket pistol is all they can conceal — an elderly person who can’t rack a standard slide, someone in a professional environment where even a small .380 is too large.

The collector market. Prewar .25 ACP pocket pistols — FN Baby, Ortgies, Bayard, German commercial Walther — are widely collected and command reasonable prices in good condition.

Where it doesn’t belong: as a primary defensive carry choice when any .380 ACP option is available. The size differential between modern micro-.380 pistols and .25 ACP pocket guns has narrowed dramatically. There’s almost no scenario where .25 ACP is the best available defensive option for someone who can legally carry.
